Herta in Honkai: Star Rail: A 2026 Guide to Quirky Team Comps
Herta in Honkai: Star Rail is a 4-Star Ice Erudition sub-DPS for Calyx farming team comps, triggering follow-up attacks on weakened foes.
I have a soft spot for Herta in Honkai: Star Rail. She is a 4-Star Ice character on the Erudition path, and in 2026 she is still widely considered one of the weakest free characters in the game. Yet I keep coming back to her because her Japanese voice lines are adorable, her lore matters, and her follow-up attacks make Calyx farming feel like a tiny, satisfying fireworks show. She is not a boss killer. She is a specialist, and once I accepted that, building teams around her became much more fun.

How Herta Actually Works
Herta is an Erudition unit, which means her Skill, Ultimate, and Talent are designed to hit multiple enemies at once. Her Skill damages every enemy on the field. Enemies below 50% HP take up to 145% of her ATK, while healthier enemies take 125%. That 50% threshold matters because Herta's Talent triggers a follow-up attack against all enemies whenever any target drops below half health. In other words, she is like a snow globe that only shakes when someone else tips it over. She does not start the avalanche. She celebrates it.
This is why Herta shines in Calyxes, where players fight wave after wave of weaker enemies. A Calyx can run up to six back-to-back battles, and every new wave gives Herta another chance to trigger her follow-up. If I pair her with another sub-DPS or a main DPS who can soften enemies, Herta becomes a cheerful cleanup crew. She is also a roomba that switches on only after the floor is already half-clean: not glamorous, but oddly effective in the right room.
What Herta Needs From a Team
When I build around Herta, I follow three rules:
-
🎯 Use her for multi-target fights, not boss battles.
-
🤝 Give her a second damage dealer who can push enemies below 50% HP.
-
🛡️ Add a Harmony support, plus a healer or shielder, so the team survives long enough for her follow-ups to matter.
Herta is a sub-DPS. She is not the character who carries a fight from 100% to 0%. She is the character who makes the last half of a fight collapse all at once.

Best Characters to Pair With Herta
| Role | Premium Option | Free-to-Play Option | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main or sub-DPS | Himeko | Serval | Himeko has follow-up attacks and Erudition coverage; Serval brings Erudition lightning damage and works well with Herta's follow-ups. |
| Main or sub-DPS | Jing Yuan | Serval | Jing Yuan's Lightning-Lord acts almost like an extra team member, giving Herta more chances to trigger her Talent. |
| Harmony support | Bronya | Yukong | Bronya boosts DMG, ATK, and Crit DMG; Yukong gives ATK bonuses that help Herta finish weakened enemies. |
| Healer | Bailu | Natasha | Bailu can revive fallen allies, while Natasha is the reliable free healer. |
| Shielder / Ice support | March 7th | March 7th | March 7th is free, deals Ice damage, and can help Herta reach Frozen bonuses if Herta has her A6 Trace unlocked. |
Himeko is my favorite partner for Herta. She is a 5-Star Erudition character with her own follow-up attacks, so the two of them can rain damage across the battlefield. Jing Yuan works for similar reasons, especially in Simulated Universe runs where the Elation path turns follow-up attacks into a spectacle. Yukong and Bronya are the Harmony characters I want when I need Herta's damage to keep up with modern DPS units. Bailu remains a premium comfort pick because her resurrection can save a messy run. Natasha is the free replacement, though she cannot revive.
March 7th deserves a special mention. She is another free Ice character, and if Herta has her A6 Trace unlocked, March 7th can help Herta hit Frozen attack bonuses. That makes the two of them a surprisingly cute and functional Ice duo. Serval can replace Himeko or Jing Yuan in a free-to-play setup because she is also Erudition and hits multiple targets.
My Favorite Herta Team Comps in 2026
Calyx Farming Comp
-
Herta
-
Himeko
-
Bronya
-
Bailu
I use this when I want to farm Relics or Ascension materials quickly. Himeko and Herta keep the waves moving, Bronya boosts Herta's damage, and Bailu keeps everyone alive. It is not a team I would take into Memory of Chaos, but for Calyxes it feels smooth.
Free-to-Play Starter Comp
-
Herta
-
Serval
-
March 7th
-
Natasha
This is the team I recommend to any player who likes Herta but does not have many 5-Stars. Serval helps lower enemy HP, March 7th shields and adds Ice, and Natasha heals. Every piece is accessible, and the team can clear Calyxes without stress.
Simulated Universe Elation Comp
-
Herta
-
Jing Yuan
-
Yukong
-
Bailu or Natasha
With the Elation path, follow-up attacks become the main event. Jing Yuan's Lightning-Lord and Herta's Talent can overwhelm multi-enemy rooms. Yukong's ATK buffs make Herta's follow-up hit harder, and a healer keeps the run stable.

Is Herta Worth Building in 2026?
Yes, but with clear expectations. Herta is still not a top-tier character, and newer damage dealers have pushed her further down the tier lists. However, Calyx farming has not gone away, and Herta's niche remains useful. She is a confetti cannon: not the main event, but when the room is already chaotic, she makes it sparkle. If I build her with ATK, Ice DMG, Crit Rate, and Crit DMG, and I surround her with a second Erudition damage dealer plus a Harmony support, she does her job well.
The key is to stop asking Herta to be something she is not. She is not a boss killer. She is not a hypercarry. She is a genius who shows up, says something cute, and then follows up with a smile. In the right Calyx team, that is more than enough.
